Heaven's angels have a new accompanist. Anna Jane (Schisler) Miller, 95, died quietly with family present on April 20, 2021 at Moravian Village where she resided. She was the wife of Dr. Warren A. Miller who died September 12, 2018. They celebrated their 70 th wedding anniversary on June 19, 2018. Born in Northampton on April 7, 1926, Anna Jane, known as AJ by her children, was the daughter of the late Lloyd and Mabel (Silfies) Schisler. She was a 1944 graduate of Northampton High School and a 1947 graduate, majoring in Music Education, from West Chester State Teachers College, now West Chester University. A skilled pianist and accompanist, she taught music in public school for a year before devoting her extraordinary energies toward nurturing and loving her family.
She and her husband, Warren, resided in Fountain Hill from 1948 until 2003, and then divided their time between Blue Heron Lake in the Poconos and Moravian Village in Bethlehem. While in Fountain Hill, she was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church where she was President of Lutheran Church Women, vice-president of the church council, member of the church choir, and Sunday School teacher. After 2003 and spending more time at Blue Heron Lake, co-founded by Harvey Silfies, her maternal grandfather, Anna Jane Miller became a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Dingman's Ferry, PA where she served as piano accompanist for the church choir for twenty years. Since May, 2017, when no longer able to get to Blue Heron, she has been a member of Christ Lutheran Church of Hellertown.
Anna Jane's passions included Blue Heron, hiking the Appalachian Trail, traveling to Europe, and opera. She became a member at Blue Heron Lake on November 9, 1949 where she was often found playing tennis, exploring the forest, listening to Saturday radio broadcasts of opera from the Met, or preparing meals for Grammy's table. Anna Jane and Warren co-authored and self-published, "A History of Blue Heron Lake," in 2004. There is a bench in the woods beside the Rock Hill Creek dedicated to her. Anna Jane's adventures on the Appalachian Trail usually included her children and grandchildren who shared her joy in the wonder of it all.
Anna Jane was a guarantor of the Bach Choir of Bethlehem and member of the Pennsylvania German Society. Always the music teacher and supporter of young musicians, AJ was an enthusiastic member of the Friends of Music of Bethlehem and served on their Board and was also president for two years. She was also active on the Boards of the Sayre Child Center and the YWCA of Bethlehem.
