Gary K. Kohler
September 24, 1941 — July 14, 2016
Gary Keith Kohler, 74, wrestled multiple myeloma with grace and courage until July 14, 2016 when he left Newtown, PA for Heaven. He is survived by beloved wife Anne (Schierl) Drennan; cherished daughters Kristin (Tim Smith), Gretchen (Jim Cheatham), Ingrid (Dave Kozemchak); five grandchildren who lit up his life: Thomas, Natalie, Evelyn, Riley and Jacob; and faithful mother-in-law Elizabeth (Eckhoff) Werner. He was predeceased by beloved wife Gale (Dalla Piazza); loving parents Forrest C.L. and Kathleen Mae (Schadler) Kohler and dear brother Donald Kohler.
Gary was born a Konkrete Kid in Northampton, PA to a close and loving extended family at a time when his father and two uncles were away fighting World War II. He was a lifelong athlete and a Philadelphia sports team fan. Gary matriculated to Lehigh University at an auspicious time: mainframe computing was in its infancy, and would change the world of chemical engineering. PhD in hand, Gary and Gale set off for Texas to raise their family and begin a 32 year Exxon career. Gary had a heart for helping others, ranging from Family Promise, hurricane relief work from 2005 to 2009 for Katrina and Wilma, to quiet philanthropy supporting education, recognizing his mentor William Schiesser, PhD; DePaul basketball programs and medical research. Gary will again reside in Northampton, enjoying eternal rest with his family.
Special thanks to Dr. Brendan Weiss of Penn Medicine, Drs. Leif Bergsagel, Nelson Leung, and Eddie Greene of the Mayo Clinic, their teams and the infusion staff at PCAM 2 West, Penn Medicine, all of whom worked together to give Gary the best medicine had to offer.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the Northampton Banquet and Event Center, located at 1601 Laubach Avenue, Northampton, PA 18067. Family will receive friends on Monday, July 18, 2016 from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at Schisler Funeral Home, 2119 Washington Avenue, Northampton, PA 18067.
Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers are welcome c/o Schisler Funeral Home in Northampton, PA, for the Penn Medicine Abramson Cancer Center; the Center for Individualized Medicine at Mayo Clinic; or to the charity of your choice.
