John R. Umstead

John R. Umstead , 90 of Nazareth, PA formerly of Bethlehem, PA passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 28, 2023, at Moravian Hall Square / Morningstar Senior Living in Nazareth, PA. Born July 22, 1933 in Moorestown, PA, he was the son of the late Charles Umstead, Sr. and the late Beulah (Schmeltzle) Umstead. He was the husband of Ruth E. (Dech) Umstead who passed away in August 2002.

John was a Nazareth high school graduate who went on to work for Bell Telephone later known as Verizon for 40 years instrumental in installations and repairs until retiring in 1995. John is a long-time member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Nazareth, PA where he was active with the Helping Hands Group, served on council to help with Boy Scout Troop #79, he was a former Sunday School Teacher and a former Youth Leader. He helped for many years with the Nazareth Food Bank, he was a member and past Sergeant of Arms for the Nazareth Rotary Club. John was also a member of the Nazareth Chrysanthemum Club, and he was well known for growing beautiful Chrysanthemums. John also served his country as a Corporal in the US Army during the Korean War.

He is survived by his son, Brian J. Umstead and wife Valerie of Whitehall, PA, daughters, Tammy wife of Richard Capra of Northampton, PA and Wanda S. wife of David Radzelovage of Bethlehem, PA, brother, Richard Umstead and wife Kathryn of Allentown, PA; 6 grandchildren; 4 great grandsons. He was predeceased by brothers, Charles, Jr. and Urial Schmeltzle and sister, Shirley M. Truman.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday January 4, 2024 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S. Broad Street Nazareth, PA. 18064. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM prior to the services in the church. Interment with Military honors will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Nazareth, PA. Bartholomew-Schisler Funeral Home, 211 E. Center St., Nazareth, PA 18064 has been entrusted with his care and service.
