Louise E. Calvin

Louise E. (Rehrig) Calvin , 81, a life-time resident of Palmerton and Bowmanstown, PA, passed away on Monday, April 1, 2024.  Born in Palmerton, she was predeceased by her father, Paul H. Rehrig, and her mother, Margaret "Peggy" Rehrig; and her beloved niece, Kristin J. Olivia Fromal, who died in 2020.

Louise graduated from Palmerton High School in 1960 and continued her education as a business major at Shippensburg College.  She worked as a secretary for both the AFL-CIO Union for the New Jersey Zinc Company, and for the Palmerton Zinc Company.  When the zinc company closed, she began a career as a Prudential Insurance agent until her retirement.  An avid knitter, she created many afghans and baby afghans for family and friends, and donated many knitted lap blankets for cancer victims to various charities.

Louise was actively involved in community activities.  She served with Palmerton Citizens for a Clean Environment, a grassroots environmental organization addressing issues related to hazardous waste and Superfund cleanup in the Borough of Palmerton.  She was president of the non-profit organization for several years.  A woman of extraordinary integrity, Louise was guided in her endeavors by the words of renowned anthropologist, Margaret Mead - "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.  Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."

Louise is survived by her son, Edmund, and his wife Ellen; two grandchildren, Andrew and Katie (Tony) Kardelis, a great-grandson, Cameron; her sister, Susan (Chris) Olivia; and two grandnephews, Aaron and Luke.
