Richard 'Dick' Stewart Hunt , a beloved member of the Lower Nazareth Township community, peacefully passed away at home on July 15th surrounded by his loving family. Born on February 10,1939 in Palmer Township, Dick was the son of the late Alvin Hunt and Minnie Hess Hunt. The youngest of 8 children, Dick grew up on 'the farm' in Bethlehem Township, which many might know today as the McDonald's on Route 191.
Dick loved sports - any and all sports - both playing and watching. He could always be counted on to know the scores, the stats, and the local team all-stars. A 1957 graduate of Nazareth Area High School, Dick was a Blue Eagle through and through, and cherished time spent reminiscing and catching up with classmates and friends from his high school years. As a young man, he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. He delighted in recounting stories from his time on the fields and courts, not only celebrating his successes but also expressing his admiration for his coaches and the valuable lessons he gained. This past fall he was proud to be inducted into the Nazareth Athletic Hall of Fame for his athletic achievements. His grandchildren adore the tale of his remarkable growth spurt, where he grew six inches taller in a single summer. It came as no surprise that after his successful career as a Blue Eagle, Dick earned a basketball scholarship to play at Muhlenberg College. Standing tall at 6'6", he left a lasting impact on the court during his time there. His two sons, Jeff and Chris, followed in his footsteps both at Nazareth High School and in college athletic careers. Dick loved nothing more than travelling to watch them play all across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, and even as far as Italy. Mid-life he found a love/hate relationship with golf, enjoying his retirement with twice weekly outings with his friends, and myriad 'tournaments' they created, which fostered friendly competition, camaraderie, and brought many, many laughs.
Dick spent most of his career in the building materials industry, working several years at Hecktown Building Supply and then ultimately as a sales representative for Super Millwork and Marvin Windows. After building his own home in Lower Nazareth, where he resided for the past 50+ years, he could often be found doing projects around the house, or helping his sons and their families with their building projects.
A resident of Lower Nazareth since 1952, Dick served the community as Township Supervisor, member of the Nazareth Board of Education, and through his involvement with the Jaycees and Kiwanis Club. Just recently he was proud to have been recognized for being a 50-year member of the Free Masons.
Dick married the love of his life, Judith (nee Reimer) in 1961, and she has been his constant companion and north star ever since. They have navigated the joys and challenges of life together: sitting side by side together at many athletic events; eating ice cream while watching the Phillies; and hosting family and friends for card games, Thanksgiving, Christmas and family reunions. Judy has been lovingly devoted to his care, especially during the last several years throughout myriad health challenges.
Dick cherished time spent with his two sons, five grandchildren, and his first great-grandchild who was born in December. Dick will be dearly missed by his family and friends, but his legacy lives on through his devoted wife Judith and their family: son Jeffrey and his wife Leslie of Mechanicsburg, PA; son Christopher and his wife Maureen of Long Valley, NJ; grandchildren: Lauren Hunt Deininger (Johnny); Jacob; Kathryn; Brian; and Kyle; and great-granddaughter, Elle Deininger. Dick is also survived by a sister, Mary Trone of Nazareth, PA; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers: Carl, Alvin "Jack", and Paul; and sisters: Grace Fehnel, Joyce Forbes, and Doris Flick. Dick was a long-time member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Nazareth.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, July 19th at noon at the Bartholomew-Schisler Funeral Home of Nazareth (211 East Center Street, Nazareth) followed by burial in Hope Cemetery of Hecktown. Visitation will take place at the Funeral Home beginning at 10am until the service beings.
