Richard W. Stewart, 86 of Northampton, PA passed away on Sunday, August 12, 2018, at Whitehall Manor in Whitehall, PA. Born August 16, 1931 in Catasauqua, PA, he was the son of the late Walter Stewart and the late Mildred (Teeple) Stewart. He was the husband of Helen B. (Broomhall) Stewart, with whom he would have shared 65 years of marriage on August 29th of this year.
Richard served his country honorably in the Navy from 1949 to 1953. He worked as a computer programmer for over 40 years at various companies including The National Security Agency, Sandura and Phoenix Clothes of Whitehall, PA. He worked briefly as a Life Insurance Salesman. He finished his career as a computer programmer for JN Davis Co in Evanston, Illinois and then for Ducks Unlimited, Inc. He continued to serve his community in retirement as a member of the American Legion Post #353 and Alliance Vol. Fire Co. both in Northampton, teaching AARP mature driving courses, Sunday school classes and counseling and mentoring challenged boys at Northampton Area School District for many years.
Surviving along with his wife are sons, Douglas R. Stewart and wife Valerie of Martin's Creek, PA and Scott W. Stewart and wife, Debra of Bethlehem, PA, daughter, Kathryn A, wife of Robert Tomecek of Catasauqua, PA; 5 grandchildren and 1 great- grandchild. He was predeceased by sister, Patsy K. Polzer.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 16, 2018 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church located at 1335 Old Carriage Road Northampton, PA 18067 with the Rev. Gary L. Walbert officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM prior to the service at church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the church memorial fund or St. Luke's Hospice, both c/o the Schisler Funeral Home, 2119 Washington Avenue, Northampton, PA 18067.
