Romaine "Betsy" LaRue (Bollinger) Burnhauser , 92, died on Tuesday, December 21, 2021, at the Lutheran Home at Topton, Topton, PA, formerly of Germansville. She was the wife of the late James D. Burnhauser, who passed on January 19, 2017. Born in Palmerton, she was the daughter of the late Jeremiah and Evena S. (Zellner) Bollinger.
Betsy graduated from Stephen S. Palmer High School, and later received her B.S. in Elementary Education from Kutztown University. She taught fourth grade for 30 years with the East Penn School District. Betsy enjoyed traveling extensively, skiing, playing bridge, antique collecting, and above all, spending time with her family. Volunteerism and service were important to Betsy. She served as secretary of the Heidelberg Township Planning Committee, Good Citizen Program Coordinator for the Liberty Bell Chapter D.A.R., and was a founding member of the Rural Preservation Association of Northwestern Lehigh County, helped set up the Allentown Hospital Archives, volunteered at Lehigh County Historical Society eventually committing solely to the Palmerton Area Historical Society (P.A.H.S.). Betsy served as the P.A.H.S. secretary, program director, established the Palmerton Area Heritage Center, and served as its director. She was also the chief archivist for the society's archives. Her greatest accomplishment was writing and producing a video on the History of Palmerton in conjunction with TV Channel 13 resulting in the society receiving the prestigious Communicator Award along with TV Channel 13. In recognition for that production, Betsy was presented with the Heart and Soul Award from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in 2001.
Survivors: Daughter, Rebecca E. wife of James Beidelman of New Tripoli. Son, Jeremiah G. and wife Linda M. Burnhauser of Germansville. Sister of the heart, Elaine (Penny) Shelly (nee Schaffer). Grandchildren; Janell Reeser wife of Kenneth, Elizabeth Earles wife of Matthew, Rachel Massie wife of Justin, Jeremiah M. Burnhauser husband of Rebecca, Elias Beidelman husband of Rebecca, Emily Ekama wife of Peter, and Amanda Bornhorst wife of Bradley. Betsy is also survived by 17 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by sister of the heart, June Marcus (nee Nicholas).
