Susan Allee Niles, 73, of Easton, Pennsylvania, died on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at St. Luke's Hospital - Bethlehem, after a long illness.
Susan was born December 18, 1952, in St. Louis, Missouri, daughter of the late Richard Davis Niles and the late Anne (McKee) Niles.
Susan was raised in Madison, Wisconsin, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1973, a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She earned a PhD in anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley. She served as a resident scholar at the School for Advanced Research in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she was a recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship. During her academic career, she was a research fellow at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, DC, and held post-doctoral fellowships at the National Gallery of Art and at Brown University. She was an elected member of the Institute of Andean Research and a fellow of the Institute of Andean Studies.
Susan was a professor at Lafayette College, where she was a member of the Department of Anthropology and Sociology for more than thirty years. She served as Clerk of the Faculty from 2008 to 2014, the first woman in this position.
Survivors include her brother, John Niles, and sister-in-law, Sarah Garner, of Amherst, Massachusetts.
Services are private and at the convenience of the family. Bartholomew-Schisler Funeral Home, Nazareth, has been entrusted with her care and arrangements.
