Warner "Ben" Benson , 83, passed away on October 21, 2023, at The Palmerton, after suffering for many years with Alzheimer's Disease. He was the husband of Sandra "Sandy" (Lower) Benson for 37 years.
Born in Rapid City, SD, he was the eldest son of Leo H. and Marguerite (Warner) Benson. A 1958 graduate of Mason City High School, Mason City, IA, he attended the University of Iowa before transferring to Iowa State University where he graduated with a degree in dairy chemistry and microbiology. From there he started his career in the dairy/cheese industry employed by Kraft Foods, IL, Star Valley Cheese, WY, Beatrice Cheese various plants across the country, Arpin Dairy, WI, and Chr. Hansen Laboratories. He later worked in sales for Macy's Whitehall and Gateway Computer, as well as being employed at Rentschler Chevrolet, and finally at Shea's Hardware. Those who knew Ben knew he enjoyed watching old TV westerns and college sports, especially Big Ten football. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye/Cyclone, Penn State, Eagles, and Phillies fan. Ben loved the U.S. Marine Corps, our military, and the Mid-West.
Survivors: Along with his wife, he is survived by his beloved dog, Shelby, and his sons John R. Benson and wife Bianca of Idaho, and James W. Benson and wife Judi, of Wisconsin. He is also survived by a brother, Thomas Benson and his wife Carol, of California, and a sister, Linda Ash and her husband, Larry of New York, along with two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and his many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends. Ben was predeceased by his parents, and a brother, Richard "Dick" Benson.
